Jose came in complaining of bilateral hip flexor pain and tightness and knee pain. His reaction Immediately after his 30 minute treatment:

Acute Injury

Acute sports injuries, such as sprains and ruptures, are a slightly different consequence of poor muscle recruitment. Reaction time is key to prevention!

 

For example, if an athlete suddenly needs to cut left when she thought she was going straight, her leg muscles must respond very quickly. If they don’t, the force of changing directions may lead to a ruptured ACL or sprained ankle.

 

Poor muscle recruitment leads to injuries in all types of sports and activities, but it’s especially prevalent in sports such as basketball, football, hockey, and soccer where agility is imperative.

Chronic Injury

Chronic sports injuries are often misunderstood, causing them to last much longer than they should. A chronic injury in most instances is nothing more than a tendon or joint injury that resulted from poor muscle recruitment.

 

For instance, a runner's knee may hurt when running but not when walking. The reason for this comes down to simple physics: the forces into the leg are higher when running than walking. If the muscles aren’t responding properly then the force is decelerated in the tendon and joint instead of the muscle belly, thus creating injury over time.

WHY DOES INJURY OCCUR? simple:

insufficient muscle recruitment in critical moments.

An injury occurs when a force enters the body and the muscles cannot decelerate it properly. When the muscles don’t respond fully and/or quickly enough, the force travels into the tendon and joint instead of being stopped in the muscle belly. This can lead to tearing of the tissue, inflammation, and pain.

"RIGHT KNEE PAIN SINCE SEPTEMBER 2018 (9 MONTHS PRIOR TO PERFORMANCE LAB SESSIONS). UNABLE TO WALK DOWN ANY STAIRS OR SINGLE-LEG DEEP KNEE BEND WITHOUT SIGNIFICANT DISCOMFORT. AFTER PERFORMANCE LAB SESSIONS - KNEE PAIN IS GONE WITH NO RECURRENCE DESPITE CONSISTENT RACING AND HIGH MILEAGE."
